Malo Twohig - Animation
It was in primary school, fourth class, when our teacher popped on the Irish animated film called “The Book of Kells” during a rainy lunch day, and to much of my peers, it was a nice background noise while they chatted. But I was mesmerised. It was the first time I had seen animation that wasn’t whatever Disney or Pixar had pumped out, and it captured the beauty of Irish folklore, another love of mine. That film inspired me to want to do something like that, to pursue animation in Ireland, and develop my skills and ideas.
To me I always loved character design and visual storytelling. A story without a character isn’t a story at all. Exploring different ways to make a character stick in people’s heads and become recognisable was a passion of mine. I also loved the ability to use the visuals around them to paint a picture of who or what they are. Over the years, I developed my own characters and explored different worlds with them, making sense of their personality, designs and surroundings.
And after college, I want to continue to hone my skills even further. I feel as if my potential is in sight and I must keep going, working in the industry to better improve my character design muscle. Because I want to create something that a kid will see and inspire them, just how it inspired me.
